How to Make a Dollhouse Table Lamp with a Working Plug
Ok, this table lamp really brought my dollhouse library together! It started life as a lamp from Hobby Lobby (you can grab a very similar one on Amazon here if your local store doesn’t have one), but a few small tweaks turned it into a fully wired, plugged-in piece that actually looks like it belongs in a real house.

Here’s how I did it:
Step 1: Swap the shade
First thing I did was unscrew the cap to remove the original shade. I wanted something a little more custom, so I swapped it out for my own 3D printed light drum instead. This is an easy way to make a mass produced lamp feel more “you,” even if wiring isn’t your thing yet.
Step 2: Drill your pilot hole
Next, I made a pilot hole using my mini drill, which is honestly one of my most-used tools in the miniature world. No mini drill? No problem, a manual hand drill works just as well for this step, it’ll just take a little more patience.
Step 3: Add the eyelets
This is where the electrical magic happens. I used the eyelets included in the Real Good Toys electrical kit to make the connection to the copper tape running through the walls. If wiring a dollhouse sounds intimidating, I promise it’s more approachable than it looks. I’ve got a full breakdown in this blog post on wiring the Vermont Farmhouse Jr., and if you want the whole process broken down step by step, grab my free ebook, Dollhouse Wiring 101: How to Add Miniature Lighting for Beginners.
Step 4: Connect the plug
Once the eyelets were in place, I connected the lamp’s plug directly to them, so the lamp actually “plugs in” just like a real one would. Such a satisfying little detail.
Step 5: Style it in
Finally, the fun part, styling! I set the finished lamp on top of a record storage piece, and it instantly made the corner feel warmer and more lived-in.
Small builds like this are such a good reminder that you don’t need to scratch build everything from nothing to make a piece feel custom. Sometimes it’s just a store-bought lamp, a drill, and a little rewiring.
Build alongside us in Lina’s Dollhouse Collective
If this build feels lonely, that is exactly what the Collective is for. Lina’s Dollhouse Collective is the Facebook group where we share ideas, put the free tools to work as part of our process, and cheer each other on through every glued finger and crooked shingle.
Inside the group you can ask the questions you do not want to post publicly, show off a build at any stage (the messy ones too), and pick up tricks the rest of us learned the hard way. We talk scale, paint, wiring, sourcing, kits, scratch builds, and yes, snack recommendations for long glue-drying breaks.
Bring your tools. Bring your scale ruler, your color palette, and your scale conversions. Bring your wins and your roadblocks. We will meet you there.
