How I Installed Canned Lights in My Mini Dollhouse (Step-by-Step)
Okay… this was one of those moments where I was like wait… this is about to look SO good.
Adding canned lights to the porch ceiling completely changed the vibe of the house. It took it from “cute build” to okay wow this actually feels real. That soft, warm glow at night? Everything.
I’m not going to lie, this step felt a little intimidating at first because it’s a mix of wiring, cutting, and aligning everything just right. But once I broke it down, it was way more doable than I expected. And honestly… 100% worth it.

Step-by-Step Installation
- Create a Ceiling Template
Start by creating a template of your porch ceiling area to ensure an accurate fit. - Cut the Foam Board
Trace the template onto foam board and carefully cut it out using an X-Acto knife. - Cut the Wood Panel
Trace the same template onto your wood sheet and cut to match the foam board piece. - Mark the Center Point
Find and mark the center of both the foam board and wood panel—this is where your light will sit. - Insert the Grommet into Foam Board
Push the sewing grommet through the center of the foam board to create the light opening. - Drill the Wood Panel Opening
Drill a hole in the wood panel large enough for the grommet to fit cleanly. - Drill Into the House Body
Drill a hole through the porch ceiling into the interior of the house to allow the wiring to pass through. - Attach the LED Light
Place the LED light on the back side of the foam board and secure it with tape. - Feed the Wiring
Carefully fish the light wire through the hole in the house. - Attach the Foam Board
Glue the foam board piece to the porch ceiling, ensuring it sits flush. - Assemble the Wood Panel Detail
Attach the grommet to the wood panel, then glue the panel over the foam board to create a finished ceiling look. - Connect the Wiring
Inside the house, connect the wires to your wiring system. - Repeat for Remaining Sections
Repeat these steps for the remaining porch ceiling sections.
This is one of those steps where you step back, turn the lights on and just have a moment.
Like… wow, I really did that.
The lighting adds so much warmth and depth and it’s one of those details that makes everything feel finished and lived-in. It’s subtle, but it changes everything.
Take your time with it, test your lights as you go (seriously . . . don’t skip that), and don’t stress if it’s not perfect on the first try. Once it all comes together, it’s so worth it.
Build alongside us in Lina’s Dollhouse Collective
If this build feels lonely, that is exactly what the Collective is for. Lina’s Dollhouse Collective is the Facebook group where we share ideas, put the free tools to work as part of our process, and cheer each other on through every glued finger and crooked shingle.
Inside the group you can ask the questions you do not want to post publicly, show off a build at any stage (the messy ones too), and pick up tricks the rest of us learned the hard way. We talk scale, paint, wiring, sourcing, kits, scratch builds, and yes, snack recommendations for long glue-drying breaks.
Bring your tools. Bring your scale ruler, your color palette, and your scale conversions. Bring your wins and your roadblocks. We will meet you there.
