DIY Faux Plant Ideas for Miniature Spaces
There’s just something about adding greenery to a miniature space that instantly makes it feel alive. Like the whole scene goes from “built” to lived in really quickly. I used this piece as an outdoor potted tree for my front porch, and it completely changed the vibe in the best way.
What I also love is how flexible this method is! You can use it for outdoor trees, indoor plants, or even mix up the vessel styles for totally different looks.
Materials
- Fake plant (I used rosemary)
- 1.2” wooden barrel spool
- 1.5” vase (you can purchase my digital file for this planter here)
- Hot glue
- Brown paint
- Paint brushes

A modern miniature tall planter with 15 softly angled sides and a gently curved base, sculptural enough to stand alone, versatile enough to style with faux greenery, dried stems, or tiny florals. A design-forward accent for indoor and outdoor 1:12 scale scenes.
Dimensions: 1.4″ H × 1″ W
Soil Supplies
- Dry coffee grounds
- Matte Mod Podge
Step-by-Step Assembly
- Paint the Plant Stem
If your faux plant stem isn’t already brown, paint it to create a more natural, realistic base. - Attach the Base Pieces
Use hot glue to secure the wooden barrel spool to the inside of the vase. This creates structure and elevates the plant slightly. - Create the Soil Mixture
Mix approximately 70% dry coffee grounds with 30% matte Mod Podge. Stir until you get a textured, soil-like consistency. - Secure the Plant
Hot glue the base of the faux plant stem into the wooden spool and position it inside the vase. - Apply the Soil Texture
Brush the coffee ground mixture around the top of the spool and base of the plant, building up a natural “soil” layer. - Let Dry Completely
Allow everything to dry fully so the texture sets in place.

Final Thoughts
I used this as an outdoor potted tree on my front porch, and I love how it turned out. It adds just the right amount of greenery without overpowering the space.
And honestly, this method is so versatile. I already know I’ll be using it again for future indoor plants too. You can switch up the vessel, plant type, or even soil texture and get a completely different look every time.
It’s one of those small details that makes the whole dollhouse feel so much more real.
