Where to Start a Dollhouse Build: The Free Miniaturist Toolkit
Welcome, friend. If you are standing at the very beginning of your first dollhouse build (or your fifteenth), this post is for you. I built every free tool on this site because I needed them myself, and I am still using each one every single week.
My free toolkit is the map. It is a single page that gathers every calculator, printable, palette tool, and tutorial library I have made, in the order you will actually need them. No hunting, no scrolling, no wondering what to click next.

Why I built the toolkit
My first build was the Vermont Farmhouse Jr. from Real Good Toys. I made every rookie mistake. I took countless trips to the local hardware store and Sherwin Williams to get paint chips and samples to bring home and test all before I landed on the one. I bought a piece of furniture at an estate sale that turned out to be 1:24, not 1:12 (a sad day). I almost cried over wiring. Every tool on this site exists because past me needed it and I want to spare current you the same trial and error.
What is inside the toolkit
There are four core tools, plus a tutorial index and a small shop of free e-books. Here is the order I recommend opening them in.
1. The Miniature Scale Converter
Type in a real-life measurement, pick your scale, and the scale converter instantly tells you how big it should be in miniature. It supports 1:6, 1:12, 1:24, and 1:48. And there’s a 1:custom option in case you aren’t working with one of those 4 common scales. There is also a built-in 1:12 reference guide for standard US room dimensions, so you can plan a build before you ever pick up a saw.
2. The Printable Scale Rulers
If the converter is the brain, the printable rulers are the hands. Print one in your scale, tape it to your workbench, fold a backup into your wallet for thrifting. You will stop second-guessing every measurement. Available in 1:6, 1:12, 1:24, and 1:48.
3. The Dollhouse Color Palette Visualizer
Before you paint anything, open the color palette visualizer. Choose colors zone by zone, upload an inspiration photo to extract a palette, or pick one of my curated suggestions. Print your palette card so you have your color choices right at your work table. (You will thank me later.)
4. The Tutorial Library
Every written tutorial lives in the tutorial index, organized by category. Tips and advice, electrical, and the full Vermont Farmhouse Jr. build are all in there. Bookmark it now, because you will come back to it more than you think.
Bonus: Free e-books and the YouTube channel
Grab the free beginner e-books for short, focused reads on things like first-build basics and wiring. Then subscribe on YouTube if you want to watch builds happen start to finish. Different brains learn different ways, so the channel and the blog work better together.
How to use the toolkit (the lazy roadmap)
- Open the toolkit page and bookmark it. Future you will be grateful.
- Pick your scale. If you are unsure, start with 1:12 (the classic). Use the scale converter to feel out what each scale actually looks like in real measurements.
- Print your ruler and stick it to your workbench.
- Plan your paint palette in the color visualizer before you buy a single bottle of paint.
- Open one tutorial from the library and read or watch it all the way through before you start your project. Resist the urge to binge ten. One is enough.
That is the whole workflow. Everything else is just craft, patience, and the small joy of watching a tiny world come together piece by piece.
Who the toolkit is for
Brand new miniaturists who need a soft landing. Returning hobbyists picking the craft back up after a long break. Experienced builders who just want a fast reference for scale or color. The tools are free, they are bookmarkable, and they will be here whenever you need them.
Build alongside us in Lina’s Dollhouse Collective
If this build feels lonely, that is exactly what the Collective is for. Lina’s Dollhouse Collective is the Facebook group where we share ideas, put the free tools to work as part of our process, and cheer each other on through every glued finger and crooked shingle.
Inside the group you can ask the questions you do not want to post publicly, show off a build at any stage (the messy ones too), and pick up tricks the rest of us learned the hard way. We talk scale, paint, wiring, sourcing, kits, scratch builds, and yes, snack recommendations for long glue-drying breaks.
Bring your tools. Bring your scale ruler, your color palette, and your scale conversions. Bring your wins and your roadblocks. We will meet you there.
